The Orwell School opened in 1895 with Mr. MacNeil engaged by the local school
trustees to teach Grades 1 through 10. Although Orwell School lacked things
that are basic today, many of its scholars went went on to achieve
high standings in colleges and universities. Others stayed in the community to
learn a trade or work family farms, while some of the more adventurous
went to sea or left the Island in search of opportunity.
